AMD symptoms

In the very early stages of AMD, you may not even notice you have the condition. This is particularly true if you have AMD in just one eye, as the other healthy eye can compensate for any vision loss in the eye with AMD. As the disease progresses or affects both eyes, AMD can affect your sight in a number of ways. The key symptoms of AMD are shown below.

Reduced Focus

Reduced visual acuity (blurred vision)
Difficulty distinguishing faces or doing any other activity which requires fine vision.

Poor Colour Vision

Poor colour vision
Including the need for increased illumination, sensitivity to glare, and decreased night vision.

Distortion

Distortion
Straight lines may appear wavy or bent. For example, tiles in the bathroom appear wavy or window frames are not straight.

Black Spots

Blind spots
Dark patches or empty spaces can appear in the centre of your vision.

If you experience any of these symptoms, don’t put it down to age or the need for new glasses, see your Optician today, or talk to your GP. Regular eye health checks with your Optician are recommended.

The sooner AMD is diagnosed the better – action now offers you the best chance of preserving your vision for the future.
